The difference between an upright bass (or double bass) and a cello

The upright bass (or double bass, big bass,Bass cello) and the cello are two different instruments, with obvious differences in size, range, timbre, and playing methods. 1. Size: Big basses are larger and heavier than cellos. The big bass is usually about 1.8 meters tall, and the cello is about 1.3 meters tall. 2. Range: The range of a big bass is lower than that of a cello. The range of the big bass is from E1 to C5, while the range of the cello is from C2 to A4. 3. Timbre: The timbre of the big bass is deeper and deeper than that of the cello, while the cello has a brighter and warmer timbre. 4. How to play: When playing the upright bass, you need to stand or sit on a high stool to pull the strings with a bow or pluck the strings with your fingers. Cellists usually play seated.

The difference between bass and guitar

Guitar and bass are two common plucked instruments. While they are somewhat similar in appearance, there are some noticeable differences in their tone, functionality, and use. 1. Size: The guitar body is small, usually face-shaped, and the neck is relatively short, with an average size of about 1 meter. The strings of the guitar are thinner and the string spacing is smaller, making it suitable for playing melodies and chords. The bass has a larger body and a relatively longer neck. The average size is about 1.2 meters, while the upright bass reaches 1.8 meters. The strings of the bass are thicker and have a wider spacing, which is suitable for playing bass and building the rhythm of music. 2. Sound range and tone: Guitars usually have six strings, usually in the EADGBE range, arranged in order from bass to treble. The guitar has a brighter tone and is suitable for playing various musical styles such as chords, melody, and harmony. Bass usually has four strings and is generally in the EADG range, which is lower than the guitar's range. The bass sound is relatively calm and heavy, and is mainly responsible for the bass part of the music, giving the music rhythm and stability. 3. Role and function: The guitar usually plays the role of melody and chords in the band. It can play the main melody, play chords or play solo. The bass usually plays the role of bass and rhythm in the band. It is used to establish the foundation of the music. It forms the rhythm foundation of the music in combination with the drums and is responsible for providing the thickness and stability of the sound. The bass can also be played solo, but is usually used in combination with an ensemble of guitars or other instruments.

About upright bass / Double bass

1. History:The originator of the bass family is the bass Viol (VIOLA DA GAMBA, also translated as viola), which was born around the 16th century. It is also called the ancient cello. Like the violin family, it is a bowed string instrument (see the picture below)

In the 17th century, the double bass (Contra Bass) was invented. By the late 19th century, a new type of bow was invented, and the common way of holding the bow with the palm facing down came into being. By the 1920s, jazz was beginning to gain prominence. Because the rhythmic expression of jazz is extremely complex, the double bass players threw away their bows and turned into plucked instruments. They were upgraded to "melody + rhythm" all-rounders in the band and were given a new life. Because of the use of plucked strings, the double bass (Contra Bass) was gradually called the double bass (Double Bass), and the double bass was officially independent from the double bass family. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, jazz bands were popular, and the bass's status in the band was unparalleled for a while. This was also the most glorious moment for the bass in the band in the entire bass history. Subsequently, the maturity of slap technology gave birth to the country rock style in the United States. This more popular music of course also meant a larger range and higher frequency performance - at this time, carrying a huge bass back and forth almost became a A bassist's nightmare. By 1951, the enthusiastic Mr. Leo Fender, who had launched the world's first electric guitar in 1948, launched a true electric bass. (Refer 01, 02

2. Structure. The bass is tuned in fourths, and the four strings are E, A, D, and G. In order to avoid adding too many lines on the bass clef, its sound is one octave lower than the actual notation. Sometimes a fifth string is added, tuned to C, or a mechanism is added to the neck of the instrument to lengthen the E string so that it can play the C note below. Sometimes there are 6 strings, 8 strings, 12 strings and 24 strings, all to enhance the performance of the bass guitar and make its playing skills and functions more complete and diversified. .

3. featureThe double bass has a deep tone and is very lyrical and expressive. It often plays unforgettable phrases with beautiful timbre, smooth melody, strong texture and rich changes. It is very flavorful to play jazz with it. In addition, due to the strong rhythm of the bass, its performance in funk music is extraordinary. And in metal bands that are getting more and more attention now, the bass is even more indispensable, whether it is new metal or traditional metal. In metal music, bass and drums are the rhythm and foundation of the band.
